Presidential limousines usually end up in museums, but here’s a rare exception: a 1965 Lincoln Continental Limo that served during the Johnson Administration is now up for auction on Bring a Trailer. Converted by Lehmann-Peterson in Chicago between 1964 and 1970, this remarkable vehicle is one of only 500 Executive Limousines ever produced.
This stretched and strengthened limo was reserved for official duties. Out of the 15 purchased by the Federal government, this particular Lincoln, measuring a whopping 21 feet in length, is believed to be the only one in private hands.
Owned by John “Bugsy” Lawlor for the past 22 years, this timepiece boasts a Massachusetts “LBJ” plate and has seen comfortable use with just over 37,000 miles on the clock.
The car drives smoothly, feeling like it’s “carved out of a block of stone,” and packs a punch with its 7.0-liter V-8 engine. While it may not be armored like some Presidential rides, it still exudes luxury.
It Features a booze cabinet complete with original crystal decanters and a White House phone with button presets above the rotary dial. A few modern upgrades, such as a Sony CD player and Panasonic speakers from the Clinton era, add to its charm.
Lawlor’s journey with the Lincoln began in 2002 when he thought he was purchasing a regular Lehmann-Peterson limo. To his surprise, the delivery came with a special box containing gold memorabilia from Johnson’s 1965 inauguration, sparking the realization that he had acquired a piece of Presidential history.
As the auction for this unique vehicle comes to a close on March 24, enthusiasts and collectors alike eagerly await to see who the next caretaker will be. With its rich history and iconic features, this Lincoln Continental Limo is a true symbol of American presidential heritage.
