In the early 1970s, Chevrolet Monte Carlo experienced fluctuations in production numbers. In 1970, GM produced 145,976 units, with the SS 454 being a popular choice, accounting for 3,823 units.
However, in 1971, production declined sharply, with only 128,600 cars produced, and SS 454 production dropping to 1,919 units. Sales rebounded the following year, with Chevrolet selling 180,819 units, although the SS 454 was no longer available.
The model was discontinued, but the option for the 454 engine remained for Monte Carlo buyers. Only 1,268 customers opted for the 454.
One of these rare big-block, Monte Carlos is now seeking restoration. This particular car has spent the last 11 years indoors, with the block still intact but removed from the vehicle.
What makes this Monte Carlo stand out even more is its paint. Originally finished in Pewter Silver (paint code 14), with a matching interior, it may be the rarest color for the 1972 Monte Carlo.
While the car requires a full restoration, particularly the driver’s quarter, which has significant metal issues due to past repairs, it presents an opportunity for a collector. The bidding is currently ongoing, with a reserve in place, hinting at its potential value.
The auction will end soon, but if it doesn’t find a buyer, it may reappear on eBay in the future. Located in Vancouver, Washington, the buyer will need a trailer for transportation if they win the auction.
