This 1990 BMW M3 Sport Evolution, one of the 600 units manufactured between December 1989 and March 1990, underwent a thorough refresh in 2018 by Enthusiast Auto Group in Cincinnati, Ohio. Painted in Jet Black over Black Nappa Leather, it boasts a 2.5-liter S14 inline-four engine paired with a dogleg five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
Notable features include 16″ basketweave wheels, a sunroof, adjustable front and rear spoilers, Recaro front sports seats, air conditioning, and an onboard computer. Acquired by the current owner in 2019, it has accumulated approximately 48,000 kilometers (30,000 miles). Offered on dealer consignment, it comes with the owner’s manual, service records, a tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Wisconsin title.
BMW introduced the M3 Evolution as a limited-production homologation model in 1987, with the Sport Evolution following in 1990. The Sport Evolution boasted increased power, a smaller fuel tank, and revised bodywork, including adjustable front and rear spoilers, brake cooling ducts replacing the fog lights, and re-profiled grille slats. Originally finished in Jet Black with red bumper stripes, this example underwent a repaint by Enthusiast Auto Group in 2018.
Its gray 16″ basketweave wheels were refinished the same year and are fitted with 225/45 Dunlop tires. Inside, the cabin showcases manually adjustable Recaro front sport seats and a rear bench upholstered in Black Nappa Leather. Noteworthy amenities include a sunroof, Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette stereo, air conditioning, and power-operated windows, mirrors, and locks.
A plaque on the center stack denotes the car as a 1990 Sport Evolution model. The suede-wrapped M-Tech II steering wheel complements VDO instrumentation, featuring a 260-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer reads approximately 48,000 kilometers (~30,000 miles).
Under the hood, the 2.5-liter S14B25 inline-four engine, rated at 238 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, received attention during the 2018 refresh. Work included resealing the intake manifold and replacing the fuel tank, pump, and level-sending unit, along with various gaskets, ignition wires, and alternator bracket bushings.
Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a close-ratio Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The transmission output seal, selector seal, transmission mounts, rear differential mount, and driveshaft flex disc were replaced in 2018, and the front subframe was reinforced. The Carfax report indicates no accidents or damage recorded since the first entry in 2018.
