Renowned as an epitome of design and engineering excellence, the 1954-57 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing remains an iconic symbol of automotive achievement on both sides of the Atlantic. Chassis No. 5500263, a distinguished U.S.-market model, stands out not only as one of the mere 1,400 Gullwing coupes ever produced between 1954 and 1957.

But also as the sole car is known to have been originally finished in the striking Code DB-229G Mittelgrün (Medium Green) exterior, complemented by a unique green and gray leather-trimmed interior. Delivered to Mercedes-Benz Distributors of New York on April 30, 1955, this exceptional 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL found its way into the hands of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation in January 1973.

Undergoing a meticulous body-off restoration in the late 2000s by the esteemed craftsmen at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, with final touches and service meticulously carried out in 2022 by Scott Grundfor Co. in Arroyo Grande, California, this Gullwing has been meticulously cared for.

Having graced the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Collection periodically from 2015-2020, it has also been showcased as part of the museum’s attractive Basement Collection when not on the main exhibit floor.

Maintaining its original, matching-numbers, rebuilt 3.0L fuel-injected inline 6-cylinder engine, the restoration process included thorough engine work, including thermal cleaning and cylinder honing, as well as a critical fuel-injection pump rebuild, ensuring optimal performance. Paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, the engine delivers the factory-rated 225 HP with precision and power.

The interior of this Gullwing is impeccably appointed with beige leather upholstery sourced from Landwerlen Leather Co. of Indianapolis, adorning the seats, dash pad, transmission tunnel, and sills. The green-painted dashboard, square-weave carpets, and black rubber floor mats add a touch of authenticity to the cabin.

Attention to detail is evident throughout, with the powder-coated frame, new body and window seals, polished brightwork, refinished chrome accents, and meticulously refurbished engine bay and suspension components.

The classic look is completed by body-color steel wheels, chrome hubcaps with matching accents, and period-correct Michelin X radial tires. Accompanied by a copy of the factory Wagenkarte (build sheet), this extraordinary early 300SL Gullwing comes with a comprehensive documentation package, including restoration photos, correspondence between previous owners, and service records from Scott Grundfor Co.
