Revealing a classic car after years of storage is a treat for any gearhead, especially when the car holds a hidden gem. This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle, documented by Chevelle authority Patrick Glenn Nichols, initially appears like a standard midsize that’s seen better days.
A repaint hides its original color, parts have been swapped, and the engine’s missing. But a closer look reveals a rare factory feature. Chevrolet, renowned for its iconic muscle cars, kept limited production records for vinyl tops, making them a rare and sought after feature.
While the green vinyl top option has been seen on a few cars recently, the black vinyl top is even more elusive, rarely appearing in the wild or at high profile auctions.
Though not a substantial value-add, this Chevelle’s black vinyl top makes it a unique and highly desirable example. Despite its rarity, this Chevelle requires significant restoration.
A repaint in the original color is essential, along with a brand-new vinyl top in the correct pattern and hue. Fortunately, various companies offer vinyl tops, making it relatively easy to find the right material. The vehicle also features Malibu replacement parts, including the grille, while the original seats remain intact.
However, the dashboard and console parts are missing. The original 402 cubic inch (6.6 liter) V8 engine is also absent, replaced by a less powerful unit.
The original four speed gearbox is also missing. Despite the extensive restoration needed, the new owner is committed to restoring this neglected classic to its former glory.
