Introduced in 1975 as the successor to the Dino 246, the Ferrari 308 occupies a significant position in the brand’s storied history. Crafted by the renowned Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, the model quickly captivated automotive enthusiasts with its stunning design and impressive performance.

The 308 GTS, which began production in 1977, retained much of the 308 GTB’s essence but stood apart due to its removable roof, offering drivers the added thrill of open-air motoring.

By 1979, the era of carbureted 308 models came to an end, with Ferrari transitioning to the GTBi and GTSi variants in 1980, marking a new chapter for this iconic series.

The targa version of the Ferrari 308 GTB was named the GTS, and it became one of the cars that cemented Ferrari’s reputation in the U.S., thanks in part to its association with a popular movie series.

Owning a Ferrari GTS didn’t require growing a mustache or becoming a detective, but for those who saw themselves as heroes—fueled by six-figure bank accounts—it was the perfect choice. Introduced just two years after the GTB’s debut at the Paris Motor Show, the 308 GTS brought the allure of a targa roof to an already celebrated design.

The 308 GTS became one of Ferrari’s most recognizable models, with its iconic shape achieving legendary status. Its narrow front profile, equipped with pop-up headlights, the sharply raked windshield, and distinctive side air intakes set it apart.

Designed by Pininfarina, the car’s aesthetics were masterfully executed. The thick B-pillars served as both side panels and rollover protection, while the rear design maintained Ferrari’s legacy of round taillights, a signature of the prancing horse brand.

Inside, Ferrari aimed to balance luxury and sportiness. The sport bucket seats were upholstered in leather, a material that also adorned the door panels. The black plastic dashboard featured three round air vents, and for added convenience, a removable stereo system was available as an option.

Under the hood, the 308 GTS housed a 2.9-liter V-8 engine, delivering 255 horsepower for the European market and 240 horsepower for the U.S. market, ensuring thrilling performance to match its stunning design.
