The AMC Gremlin was a line of subcompact economy cars introduced in the 1971 model year. Built on a shortened Hornet platform, the Gremlin was available exclusively as a two-door hatchback.

Although the Gremlin only spanned one generation, it underwent continuous updates throughout its production run. The model offered a variety of inline six engines, with a few V8 options also available.

Among the most notable variants was the rare 401-XR, a dealer-built version featuring a 6.6L V8 engine. Production of the AMC Gremlin continued until 1978, when it was replaced by the AMC Spirit.

Looking back, AMC’s approach to creating an import-fighter with the Gremlin seems like an unlikely formula for success.

The Gremlin was based on the Hornet, which itself was a rather conventional vehicle. The Gremlin retained design elements like the standard cam-in-block straight-six engines and a live rear axle supported by leaf springs.

In contrast, competitors like General Motors were heavily investing in the Chevrolet Vega, which not only featured a new four-cylinder engine and coil-spring rear suspension but also introduced advanced rustproofing technologies.

Even Ford’s Pinto, a relatively conventional design, came with a more modern overhead-camshaft four-cylinder engine sourced from Ford’s European division.

To keep costs low, AMC equipped the Gremlin with basic features like four-wheel drum brakes and a three-speed transmission without a synchronizer for first gear.

Even the back seat was an optional feature. Recognizing the quality issues that plagued domestic cars, AMC chose not to install a hatchback or trunk lid to maintain the rigidity of the body shell.

Instead, the limited cargo space in the Gremlin could be accessed by lifting the rear window, but only in four-seat models. Two-seat “commuter” versions had a fixed rear window.
