Ever since it came out, the Tesla Model Y Performance has been the favorite for people wanting a sporty electric SUV. But now, there are other choices too, as more car companies are making similar vehicles.
One notable competitor is Hyundai, which has an Ioniq 5 N. This racetrack-developed crossover features simulated gears, engine noise, and a drift mode. But which is faster in a drag race? The video from the Bulgarian YouTube channel Supercharged BG provides a clear answer.
The Tesla Model Y Performance comes equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers 530 horsepower. It weighs around 4,400 pounds and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. The starting price in the U.S., excluding federal and state incentives, is $51,490.
On the other side, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N offers a maximum output of 641 horsepower, thanks to the N Grin Boost function, which lasts for 10 seconds. This allows the Ioniq 5 N to sprint to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds (Hyundai USA does not publish the 0-60 mph time). The Ioniq 5 N is about 400 pounds heavier than the Model Y Performance and costs around $15,000 more.
The price difference increases when considering that the Model Y is eligible for a $7,500 tax credit. If all conditions are met, leasing either EV can also qualify you for this credit.
In the video, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N recorded a best quarter-mile time of 11.28 seconds at 117 mph. The Tesla Model Y Performance completed the quarter-mile in 12.13 seconds at nearly 112 mph.
So, is the extra cost of the Hyundai worth it? While it does offer features like drift mode and other enhancements, the additional $22,000 is a significant amount.
