BMW is set to launch its first all-electric M-series performance car, marking a dramatic shift for the brand. Known for its combustion-engine icons, BMW’s M division is now developing a quad-motor electric vehicle (EV) expected to debut in 2026 or 2027. This Neue Klasse-based sedan will be offered alongside traditional models like the M3, and M division head Frank van Meel claims the powertrain will deliver up to 1,341 horsepower (1,000 kW), making it one of the most powerful cars the company has ever produced.
The electric motors, developed in-house by BMW, are designed to set new industry benchmarks. Drawing a parallel to legendary M-series engines like the S68 and S58, BMW sees its e-motors as a cornerstone of its innovation. Van Meel has boldly stated that this EV will outperform anything currently available, demonstrating the brand’s confidence in its engineering prowess. This high-performance sedan promises to achieve extraordinary acceleration and power, with a 0-60 mph time of under three seconds.
To support such power, the EV will feature advanced technologies, including an 800-volt architecture for ultra-fast DC charging and a battery with unique chemistry and enhanced cooling. The cooling system and potentially water-and-oil-cooled motors underscore BMW’s focus on efficiency and reliability at extreme performance levels. These enhancements aim to deliver not only raw power but also durability and consistency under demanding conditions.
Beyond power, BMW is utilizing its electric motors to revolutionize vehicle dynamics. The quad-motor setup enables precise torque control at each wheel, improving handling and stability. This level of control is expected to make the car incredibly agile, with handling described as “neutral, linear, and predictable.” Van Meel likened the driving experience to a fantastical journey, emphasizing the blend of precision and excitement this technology will offer.
In addition to the quad-motor version, BMW is exploring a rear-wheel-drive, two-motor variant with slightly lower power but similar advanced systems. This model would target enthusiasts seeking a purist driving experience. Furthermore, a potential M version of the Neue Klasse X SUV suggests BMW’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup while maintaining the M brand’s reputation for high performance and driving dynamics.
