Ford CEO Jim Farley believes Mustang car should be lighter

Ford CEO Jim Farley is a big fan of the Mustang car. He believes that to make it even better, it needs some changes, like getting lighter and improving its mechanics. He talked about this with Autocar at the Goodwood event. Farley wants to keep the powerful V8 engine in the Mustang but also make it lighter.

“We owe it to those great engineers that their work continues and gets perfected. I always want us to major on stuff we do very well, like suspension damping, steering feel, brake feel and so on. And we have got to get our cars lighter – and that includes our Mustang versions,” said Jim Farley, CEO, Ford.

Farley has experience driving the Mustang GT4 factory race car in IMSA events. He’s even entering the Dark Horse series this year, which has different hour and a half races. So, he knows what a sports car needs, and he believes making it lighter is important.

The newest Mustang isn’t much heavier than older models. It weighs around 3,500 lbs to just under 4,000 lbs. Farley thinks the car can be improved despite being more powerful and driving better than ever.

Ford isn’t getting rid of the two-door coupe Mustang yet, but it’s looking at adding four-door sports sedans to the lineup. This is because there’s a demand for them, and they offer more versatility to consumers. However, Ford plans to keep the V8 engine in the Mustang lineup. They are exploring hybrids and sustainable fuels to continue offering the V8 engine to enthusiasts.

Farley mentioned that Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford wouldn’t agree to an all-electric Mustang coupe. The lineup will change over time, but Ford is committed to keeping the classic V8 muscle car alive.
