Mercedes tried something new with their car design in 2022, but it didn’t bring them much success. They only won one race that year. So, they made changes for 2023, raising the car’s platform. However, they still faced problems with aerodynamics, especially at Monaco, so they had to make big changes to the bodywork.
This year, Mercedes went back to a more traditional design for their W15 car, focusing on fixing issues with the rear-end stability. Despite this, they haven’t performed as well as they’d hoped. They’re currently fourth in the standings, behind Ferrari and McLaren.
But Lewis Hamilton, one of Mercedes’ drivers, believes the car still has a lot of potential. He disagrees with the idea that the car is like an “evil sister,” a term used by their team boss Toto Wolff to describe a difficult car.
Hamilton said, “Our car is amazing, and there’s still a lot more we can get out of it. We just need to figure out how to set it up better.”
He’s hopeful that they’ll improve at the Australian Grand Prix. Mercedes has been working hard to understand the car better and make improvements.
Hamilton’s teammate, George Russell, has noticed that Mercedes seems to struggle as the race weekends progress. He thinks this might be because they haven’t had enough time to test the car properly.
“We’ve only had a few days of practice and two races,” Russell said. “It’s like a football team that’s still learning how to play together at the start of the season. We’re learning a lot from each race and trying to figure out how to get the best out of the car.”
