In 2022, Mercedes faced problems with their racing car. It was bouncing and swaying, making it hard to control. Even in 2024, with new car called W15, things didn’t get much better. The Mercedes’ racing team boss, Wolff, thinks the issue might be with how they test the car in the wind tunnel. He says what they see in the wind tunnel doesn’t match what happens on the track.

“We fixed a lot of things that could have been causing problems,” Wolff said. “But still, what we see in the wind tunnel doesn’t match what happens on the track.”

He doesn’t blame any one person for the problem. He thinks it’s just hard to understand the data they get from testing.

Wolff always talks about how Mercedes has a culture of not blaming anyone for mistakes. “It’s hard,” he said, “because in my past jobs, I knew what needed fixing. But here, it’s not so clear.”

Wolff talked about the recent race in Australia, where one of their drivers, Hamilton, had to stop because the car’s engine broke. Their other driver, Russell, crashed near the end of the race. Meanwhile, Ferrari took first and second place.

“Seeing Ferrari and McLaren doing so well makes it even tougher,” Wolff said. “Last year, we were leading in Australia. Now, we have to figure out what’s going wrong. It’s really hard.”
