Sainz had surgery for appendicitis, but he still won the race in Melbourne. He overtook Max Verstappen, who was in the lead because Verstappen had trouble with his brakes. Verstappen had to retire from the race, so Sainz won comfortably ahead of his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. This was Sainz’s first win since the Singapore Grand Prix last year. He is one of the few drivers besides Verstappen to win a race since April last year.
Sainz will lose his seat at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes in 2025. This makes him one of the most important drivers in the market.
There’s been a lot of talk about who will take Sergio Perez’s seat at Red Bull if he leaves. People have been talking about Red Bull’s drivers like Daniel Ricciardo, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson. But there are also rumors that Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin might be considered. Horner, the boss of Red Bull, said they’re open to looking outside their pool of drivers.
Horner mentioned Sainz, who used to be part of the Red Bull program before. He raced for Toro Rosso alongside Verstappen, Daniil Kvyat, and Pierre Gasly from 2016 to 2017 before moving to Renault.
When asked if Horner would consider bringing Sainz back, he said they’re open to all possibilities. He also mentioned that Sainz is the only driver who has beaten Red Bull recently.
Sainz was asked if his performance in Melbourne, especially after having surgery just two weeks ago, made him more valuable. He said it helped, but he’s still without a job for next year. He said he races to prove to himself that he can do well, not just to impress team bosses. He plans to keep racing with the same mentality for the rest of the year.
