On Thursday, it was announced that Fernando Alonso will continue to race for Aston Martin until at least 2026. This decision comes as Honda joins the team as its works power unit partner.

Alonso and Honda had a tough time when they worked together at McLaren in the past. The partnership ended early because of poor results and disagreements off the track.

Back then, Alonso didn’t always speak positively about Honda. But now, after seven years, things seem to have changed. Alonso sees the opportunity to work with Honda again as a big reason to stay at Aston Martin.

He said, “Part of the reason I’m staying at Aston is because they’re working with Honda in 2026. That was very important to me.”

Alonso has respect for Honda’s success in Formula 1 and motorsport. Even though things didn’t go well at McLaren, he believes Honda has improved and is now doing great in the sport.

He added, “We now have the chance to work together again. That’s something I’m really happy about.”

Honda and Aston’s fuel partner, Aramco, are prepared for F1’s move to sustainable fuels. This made Alonso even more convinced that joining forces with Honda again was a good decision.

Alonso explained, “With sustainable fuels in 2026, I’m excited to try them out. We have a great partner in Aramco, so I see this as a win-win situation.”

He also trusts Honda’s engine, seeing how well it performs with Red Bull and AlphaTauri. With new regulations coming in 2026, Alonso believes Honda has what it takes to succeed.
