McLaren had a good start to the 2024 season. They were ranked third before the fifth round, even ahead of Mercedes. But they admitted that they still hadn’t fixed a problem with their car’s performance at low speeds.
This problem could cause trouble at certain tracks, especially at the Shanghai International Circuit. This track has many slow corners and a tricky start to the lap with tight turns. McLaren’s car struggles with grip in these kinds of corners.
Stella, a member of McLaren’s team, said, “China is the track that worries me the most. There are so many slow corners and long turns. We haven’t been able to improve the car enough for these kinds of corners.”
He also said that China might be a tough race for them, but they hope to do better in the second part of the season.
But Stella also sees some opportunities in the race format. This race will have a sprint format, meaning teams will have less time to practice before the main event.
He said, “It’s going to be a challenging event. We need to see how the track feels and how the tires handle it. But if we do a better job than others, it could be a big opportunity.”
