During the race on Lap 27, Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin made a mistake, causing other cars to brake suddenly. Lance Stroll, driving for the same team, crashed into Daniel Ricciardo’s car from Red Bull Racing.
Stroll thought Alonso caused the crash by braking suddenly, but the race officials disagreed. They gave Stroll a penalty for causing the crash.
Ricciardo was very upset with Stroll because he felt Stroll wasn’t paying attention. He said he watched the replay and saw that Stroll wasn’t looking at him when they were braking. Ricciardo was disappointed that Stroll didn’t take responsibility for the crash.
“I don’t know what he’s doing, where his head is, but all he has to do is worry about me in that situation, and he clearly wasn’t,” Ricciardo said.
Ricciardo was even more upset when he heard Stroll’s comments on the radio, where Stroll called him an idiot and blamed him for the crash.
“The only thing you’ve got to do is watch the car in front. We can’t predict what the leader’s gonna do. The race doesn’t start until the control line,” Ricciardo said.
Stroll later clarified that he didn’t mean to blame Ricciardo specifically. He said everyone braked suddenly, and Ricciardo was just in front of him.
“I don’t think he slammed on the brakes, It was a concertina effect,” Stroll said.
The race officials said Stroll should have been more careful and avoided the crash. They blamed Stroll for the crash, which ended Ricciardo’s race.
