As the news got out before the Chinese Grand Prix, Formula 1 teams are planning to talk with the FIA and FOM about changing the points system for 2025. They want to give points down to 12th place.
Right now, the top seven positions get points, but there’s not much chance for the midfield teams to score. So, they want to change things from eighth place down.
The change won’t affect the top teams much, and it won’t make them score more points, which would mean they have to pay more fees to the FIA.
For this change to happen in 2025, more than half of the teams need to agree, which means at least five teams, and the FIA and FOM need to support it too.
It’s possible that teams might say one thing in public but vote differently. But it seems even the top teams are okay with this change.
Fred Vasseur from Ferrari said, “I’m not against it. I understand the frustration of finishing 11th and getting no reward.”
Christian Horner from Red Bull said, “Teams from six to 10 are fighting just as hard as teams from one to five. I’m okay with it.”
The teams fighting for those lower points are especially keen on this change.
Laurent Mekies from Red Bull said, “I support this change. Even if you finish 11th, you get no points, which isn’t fair.”
Ayao Komatsu from Haas said, “What’s the downside? Currently, we have three teams with zero points, and I don’t think that’s good for the sport.”
