According to Oscar Piastri, an Australian driver for McLaren, understanding why they’re fast on some days and slow on others is important. He says they have some ideas but need to make sure they’re right.
For example, in China, McLaren did better than expected. Piastri finds it exciting for the future, especially with new car parts coming. McLaren’s performance can also be affected by the type and duration of corners on each track.
Piastri says it’s a bit frustrating to have such ups and downs, but when they do well unexpectedly, it’s encouraging. They just need to figure out why it happens.
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, thinks their good performance in China might be because the track didn’t put as much pressure on the front tires as before. Also, the weather conditions helped the rear tires stay cool during the race.
Stella says they made some changes to the car setup after a race before China, focusing on improving race pace rather than qualifying speed. These changes seemed to help during the race.
So, there are many factors involved in McLaren’s performance, and it’s not just one thing that makes them do well or struggle.
