Mercedes hasn’t been consistent in Formula 1 since they changed some rules two years ago. This season, it’s been the same story.
At first, Hamilton liked his car, calling it “amazing.” But after some practice in Australia, he felt unsure about it. Then in Japan, he felt really good about it again, and he did well in China too. But in the end, he didn’t do so well in qualifying.
Even though Hamilton has shown flashes of his speed, he hasn’t finished in the top six in any Sunday race this season. But Mercedes boss Wolff believes Hamilton will keep working hard for the rest of the season, especially in his relationship with his teammate George Russell.
“I think that Lewis is a pro and has behaved in that way until now, trying to keep his morale up and the morale of the team even if the results don’t come,” Wolff said. “I have no doubt that this is going to last. He has also been supportive of George.”
Hamilton himself said he’s focused on doing well with Mercedes this season, not thinking too much about moving to Ferrari.
“Right now, I want to finish on a high here,” Hamilton said. “So all my energy is going into this. Of course, there’s excitement for the future. But right now, we’re going through a difficult place. That’s my challenge.
“That’s where all my energy is going, to try and figure out how we can get ourselves back to the top. How can I work with the guys? How can I give better debriefs, give them better direction to get back fighting at the front?
“I’m a competitor first and foremost, so I want to win. Just thinking about the next year isn’t going to help me do that.”
