F1 teams and leaders are thinking about changing how they give out points in races. Right now, only the top 10 drivers get points. But they’re talking about making it more than that.
At a recent meeting called the F1 Commission, they looked at a plan to give points to the top 12 drivers. But they decided they need more time to figure out the best way to do it.
Now, they’re thinking about going even further and giving points to more drivers, maybe all the way to 20th place.
James Vowles, who leads the Williams team, talked about this idea. He thinks changing how points work is a good idea, but they need to figure out exactly how many positions should get points. Should it be the top 12 drivers? Or maybe more?
Mike Krack, who runs the Aston Martin team, agrees. He says the audience for F1 races has changed over time, so it’s a good idea to think about changing the points system. He thinks there should always be something to compete for, no matter where a driver finishes in the race.
Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren, also has thoughts on this. He thinks maybe every driver should get points. That would make every pass in a race more important. Right now, some drivers might give up if they’re not in the top 10 because they won’t get any points. But if everyone can get points, it keeps the race exciting.
The teams and leaders in F1 agree that changing the points system could be a good thing. They want to make sure they get it right, though. They don’t want to make changes and then have to change it again later. So, they’re taking their time to think about it and come up with the best plan.
