Former President Donald Trump attended the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday as a special guest of McLaren. He walked around the paddock with a lot of people watching him, then went into the McLaren garage.
At the race, Trump spoke with McLaren’s Racing CEO Zak Brown and also met with F1 boss Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. McLaren surprisingly won the race, even though Max Verstappen was expected to win.
After the race, Trump talked to Lando Norris, the winning driver. Norris said he felt honored that Trump spoke to him and even joked that Trump called him his lucky charm.
During the race broadcast, the TV announcers made a play on words, saying “Norris trumps Lando” as Norris crossed the finish line.
Trump’s visit to the Formula 1 race happened while he’s facing some legal troubles. People had different reactions to seeing him there. Some cheered, and some booed as he walked around the pit lane.
When asked about Trump’s visit, McLaren explained that they accepted the request for him to visit their garage because they respect the office of the President of the United States.
At the press conference after the race, Norris talked more about meeting Trump. He said it was an honor because Trump congratulated him and called himself Norris’s lucky charm. Norris was thankful that someone like Trump recognized his hard work and achievements.
