At the Miami Grand Prix, Aston Martin’s driver, Fernando Alonso, talked about how penalties are given out in Formula 1. He thought some drivers don’t get punished enough when they make mistakes, especially if they’re not Spanish like him.
Alonso felt he got penalties in Australia and China for things he didn’t think deserved punishment. Meanwhile, he thought Lewis Hamilton got away with being too aggressive at the start of the Miami sprint race.
He said right after the Saturday race, “I guess they won’t decide anything, because he’s not Spanish.” Alonso also felt Hamilton’s move spoiled the race for some drivers, especially Lando Norris.
Alonso talked to Ben Sulayem, who is important in F1, after making these comments. Alonso said he’s hopeful things will get better in the future.
“I spoke with him and he’s always on board on every opinion that the drivers have,” said Alonso.
“He knows that we are the ones driving the cars and that we can have some suggestions on things.”
The FIA, the organization that oversees F1, is working on making new guidelines for drivers. These guidelines will make it clearer what drivers can and can’t do on the track.
They’re talking with drivers and teams to make sure everyone understands the new rules. These rules will be ready for the 2025 season and will apply to all racing levels.
Right now, the rules focus on who has the right to a corner and how much space they should give to other drivers. These rules started in 2022.
Mike Krack, the team principal of Aston Martin, said everyone wants these rules to be applied fairly.
“We want consistent judgments,” said Krack.
“But I think everybody wants consistency. Everybody should look over the guidelines, including ourselves, and then we take a fresh start.”
