In Formula 1, drivers can get penalty points along with other penalties if they’re involved in certain incidents. If a driver gets 12 points in 12 months, they can be banned from racing for a race.
Kevin Magnussen, who drives for Haas, has gotten close to that limit with 10 points, with some given after the Miami Grand Prix.
But drivers are worried about how the points are given out. Logan Sargeant got two points after the Chinese Grand Prix for something he thinks wasn’t serious enough. He was behind another driver when a safety car came out, but he thinks it was a small mistake.
Sargeant thinks the system is like a “joke.” He said, “To get penalty points for what it was, was a bit of a joke.”
He also mentioned that he’s seen worse things happen without any points being given. He thinks the system needs to change.
Before Magnussen, Sergio Perez had the most penalty points.
Perez thinks the system needs a look. He said, “Sometimes you already pay the consequences for that and to add some penalty points, and given that we have now more races, it’s something that definitely should be looked at.”
He thinks many incidents get points even when they might not be that serious. But he hopes things can be changed in the future.
