James Vowles, from Williams, thinks hitting the minimum weight the rules ask for is going to be a tough job

In 2026, big changes are coming to Formula 1. They’re shaking up how cars are designed, both inside and out. Now, there’s going to be a more even split between the old-fashioned engine and the new hybrid part. The hybrid bit won’t have that turbo thing anymore.

With all this focus on hybrids, the engines are going to get heavier. But the cars themselves will slim down a bit. They’ll be shorter and not as wide. Plus, the folks who work on how the cars move through the air are going to try some new stuff to make racing more exciting.

These changes might mean the cars weigh 40 to 50 kilograms less. But James Vowles, from Williams, thinks hitting the minimum weight the rules ask for is going to be a tough job. He says it’s going to be as tricky as it was for some teams when the 2022 rules started.

“I don’t think any team can do it,” Vowles said.

But weight isn’t the only thing on Vowles’ mind. He’s also talking about making Williams better overall. He says they’ve got a long way to go before they can dream about winning any championships.

Vowles wants to update how things work inside the team and get better materials for building cars. He says every part of the team needs to step up if they want to be champions.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “Weight is a big issue, but it’s not the only one.”
