Kevin Magnussen had a crash at the Monaco Grand Prix. It happened right at the start when he and Sergio Perez bumped into each other. They hit each other’s wheels and went into the barriers. Another driver, Nico Hulkenberg, also got stuck in the mess.
After watching the crash many times, Magnussen still doesn’t understand why Perez didn’t give him enough space. He believes Perez saw him but didn’t leave room for him on purpose.
Magnussen thinks Perez tried to push him towards the wall to make him back off. But Magnussen kept going because he trusted Perez to leave him space since he knew he was there.
When asked if he thought Perez was to blame, Magnussen said yes. Even after watching the crash again, his opinion didn’t change.
Magnussen explained that he wouldn’t have stayed beside Perez if he wasn’t sure Perez saw him. He believed Perez saw him, so he trusted him to leave room. But looking back, Magnussen admits he shouldn’t have trusted him.
He also said that once he got close to Perez, he couldn’t back off. If he had braked, Perez’s car would have hit his. So, he had to keep going and hope Perez would leave room.
Magnussen noticed Perez checking his mirrors, so he knew Perez saw him. If he hadn’t been sure, he would have backed off earlier.
