The McLaren driver fought with Mercedes’ George Russell and Lewis Hamilton for a podium spot in the Montreal race but ended up finishing fifth.
He thought he had a chance for a top three finish until the Mercedes drivers aggressively overtook him near the end.
Piastri said, “Pretty close until I got behind the Mercedes, and then I realised that they were on a mission.”
“It would have been tough to keep them behind all the way to the end,” he added. “They were clearly a lot quicker than everybody, especially on new tyres.”
Mercedes made improvements in Canada with a new front wing on their car that they first used in Monaco.
Piastri admitted he was surprised by how fast Mercedes was. He said, “I think the fact that they were fast wasn’t a big surprise. I think that they were so fast was.”
“They’ve been very quick this weekend,” he continued. “They’ve switched on the tyres well.”
Piastri tried his best to hold off the Mercedes drivers and had a minor brush with Russell near the end of the race.
He said, “It’s a tough corner to go two wide in. In the end, he got past anyway. So, I don’t think it really changed the result, but hopefully it was entertaining.”
