The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has begun the process of securing FIA Grade 1 accreditation in hopes of bringing the South African Grand Prix back to the Formula 1 calendar.
With a rich history in the sport, Kyalami first hosted a world championship event in 1967, and the last took place 31 years ago.
Formula 1 has shown interest in returning to Africa, but a lack of circuits that meet the necessary standards has slowed any immediate plans.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton recently emphasized that the sport “can’t continue to ignore” Africa’s absence from the F1 schedule.
To prepare the track for F1, Kyalami has partnered with Apex Circuit Design, aiming to implement the renovations required for it to host Formula 1 cars.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Gayton McKenzie, recently met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in Azerbaijan, where he also discussed the project with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
McKenzie remarked that the collaboration with Apex brings South Africa “one step closer to bringing F1 to South Africa.”
Apex Circuit Design has an impressive portfolio that includes the Miami International Autodrome, the annual host of the F1 Miami Grand Prix.
Expressing its ambition to rejoin the F1 calendar, Kyalami stated, “With its rich history of Formula 1 events at the circuit, Kyalami is perfectly suited to host top-tier international motor racing events.
“Sharing the ethos of creating an engaging spectator and participant experience, Kyalami and Apex are working together to prepare Kyalami for FIA Grade 1 accreditation.
“While negotiations with various stakeholders, including Formula 1 owners Liberty Media, continue tirelessly behind the scenes, South Africans can rest assured that there will be a suitable home for the return of Formula 1.”
