The upcoming 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ sedan marks a significant leap in performance and efficiency, boasting a potent plug-in hybrid powertrain and an impressive electric range. Scheduled for release in the U.S. by late 2024, this latest addition to the E-class family promises to redefine the driving experience.
Under the hood, the 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid combines a robust 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a formidable 576 horsepower.
With the optional Race Start mode engaged, the power output escalates to an astonishing 603 hp, surpassing even the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
This remarkable increase in power underscores the remarkable advancements in automotive technology. Drawing inspiration from the GLE53 Hybrid, the E53 Hybrid features an enhanced electric motor, generating up to 161 horsepower and 352 pound-feet of torque. When combined with the engine’s output, the E53 Hybrid achieves a peak torque of 553 pound-feet.
The optional AMG Dynamic Plus package further elevates performance, offering a short-term power boost during Race Start mode. The heart of the E53 Hybrid lies in its sizable 21.2-kWh battery pack, strategically positioned under the rear floor.
This battery configuration enables an impressive electric range, with AMG targeting a WLTP rating of 62 miles in Europe.
While EPA numbers may vary, the E53 Hybrid is expected to deliver over 40 miles of EV range, with the capability to reach speeds of up to 87 mph solely on electric power. In addition to its electrifying performance, the E53 Hybrid offers various dynamic features, including upgraded brakes and the optional Dynamic Plus package.
With a zero-to-62-mph time of 3.8 seconds in Race Start mode, the E53 Hybrid promises exhilarating acceleration while maintaining exceptional efficiency. The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ embodies the perfect blend of power, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology, setting a new standard for luxury performance sedans.
The E53 Hybrid sets a new benchmark for plug-in hybrid convenience with its rapid recharging capability. Equipped with the option of a 60-kW DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes, offering unparalleled convenience for drivers on the go.
Even without the DC charger, the onboard AC charger operates efficiently at up to 11 kW. The hybrid system introduces two innovative driving modes: Electric mode, which prioritizes electric propulsion until the battery is depleted, and Battery Hold mode, which preserves the battery charge for later use.
A haptic throttle pedal enhances the driving experience by signaling maximum performance delivery during electric operation, seamlessly transitioning to hybrid mode when necessary. While the E53 Hybrid exudes a muscular appearance distinct from the standard E-Class, it leaves room for the anticipated E63 variant.
Sporting a redesigned radiator grille adorned with AMG’s signature vertical strakes and illuminated surround, along with a more aggressive front bumper and widened fenders, the E53 Hybrid commands attention on the road. The rear features quad tailpipes, a sleek trunk-lid spoiler, and a distinctive red E53 badge denoting its hybrid powertrain.
Inside, subtle enhancements include discreet AMG branding on the steering wheel base and updated instrument panel graphics. European customers can opt for the Superscreen, which incorporates a passenger-side monitor into the UX system, or a standard configuration with a stylish open-pore gray ash timber panel accentuated by backlighting.
While U.S. specifications are pending, the Superscreen may become standard equipment. Continuing the tradition, the AMG retains its steering column gear selector wand, offering familiarity to drivers.
The gear change paddles behind the steering wheel serve a dual purpose, enabling drivers to select ratios in dynamic modes and adjust regenerative braking levels in electric mode. AMG’s most aggressive regenerative braking setting functions as a one-pedal driving mode, further enhancing efficiency and driver engagement.
The E53 Hybrid boasts several hardware upgrades aimed at enhancing performance and driving dynamics. Double-valve active dampers provide precise control over rebound and compression, ensuring optimal handling in various driving conditions.
Standard rear-wheel steering improves agility and maneuverability, while additional reinforcement in the body shell enhances stiffness for improved stability and responsiveness. Structural enhancements, such as a cross-brace between the front strut towers and extra bracing for the rear axle mounts, contribute to overall chassis rigidity.
Standard braking performance is bolstered by four-pot brake calipers paired with 14.5-inch-diameter vented front discs. Opt for the Dynamic Plus package upgrades to six-pot calipers and larger 15.3-inch rotors, further enhancing stopping power and performance.
While deliveries in the U.S. are slated to begin in the third quarter of 2024, pricing details have yet to be announced.
The new E53 Hybrid in Europe is priced slightly higher than its predecessor, but AMG aims to maintain competitive pricing when it reaches the U.S. market. For reference, the previous E53 sedan had a starting price of $82,450 in 2022.
