Mercedes-Benz AMG, renowned for its high-performance combustion engines, is shifting gears towards a more electrified future, expanding its offerings with a range of electric vehicles (EVs).
The performance arm of Mercedes-Benz has already introduced its take on the EQE sedan, EQE SUV, and EQS hatchback. Now, it’s gearing up for its first standalone EV, recently spied in prototype form.
Based on AMG’s bespoke modular EV platform, dubbed AMG.EA, the dedicated EV is slated for a late 2025 debut, likely hitting U.S. shores as a 2026 model. It’s a sleek four-door hatchback, potentially serving as an electric alternative to the current GT 4-Door Coupe.
Expect both versions to coexist initially, as the gas-powered GT 4-Door Coupe remains in production plans, following Mercedes’ decision to continue offering internal combustion engine vehicles alongside EVs.
The design direction for AMG’s inaugural EV was teased with the 2022 Vision AMG concept. Featuring axial-flux motors developed by Yasa, known for their high performance and compact size, these motors promise remarkable power outputs in a lightweight package.
AMG’s expertise with electric powertrains dates back to the SLS AMG Electric Drive in 2014, showcasing its prowess in high-performance EVs. With insights from Formula 1, AMG is poised to leverage advanced energy management technologies for its upcoming EVs.
Before the dedicated EV arrives, expect AMG to unveil tuned versions of future electric CLA-Class and GLC-Class models, signaling the brand’s commitment to electrification across its lineup.
