Mercedes-Benz has finally introduced the electric G-Wagen, called the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. This new electric SUV is different from the company’s previous electric cars.

It’s not called the EQG. It has four electric motors, giving it 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. The motors are in the front and rear axles, each with two motors and gearboxes. This is the first mass-produced vehicle from Mercedes-Benz with individual-wheel drive.

The electric G-Wagen has special features for off-roading, like G-Turn and G-Steering. It has a low range reduction gear ratio and can maintain steady speeds over rough terrain.

This G-Wagen doesn’t have typical front, center, and rear differentials. Instead, each wheel has its own motor, creating “virtual differential locks.”

It has an approach angle of 32 degrees and a departure angle of 30.7 degrees. It can wade deeper and has more ground clearance than other G-Wagens.

On-road, it can go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds. The battery pack gives it about 294 miles of range on the European WLTP test cycle.

It has aerodynamic enhancements to improve range. Mercedes-Benz has added tech features like an optional light band in the grille and a new “design box” for more storage.

The price hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s sure to be a premium SUV.
