Reports from Germany affirm that Mercedes-Benz Australia is currently in deliberations with headquarters regarding the potential inclusion of a diesel variant, the Mercedes-Benz G 450d, in its local lineup alongside the recently refreshed G-Class offerings. The proposed G 450d would complement the facelifted AMG G 63 and the all-new electric G 580 with EQ Technology, possibly extending the range to three or four G-Class models available in Australia.
Presently, the G 63 stands as the sole G-Class model on sale in the country, priced at slightly over $384,000 before on-road costs. The G 450d is anticipated to feature a mild-hybrid powertrain centered around a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel engine, generating 270kW of power at 4000rpm and 750Nm of torque from 1350rpm to 2800rpm. An electric motor integrated between the engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission can provide an additional 15kW and 200Nm as needed.
In comparison, the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six petrol engine powering the new mild-hybrid G 500 delivers 330kW at 6100rpm and 560Nm from 1950rpm to 5500rpm, with its electric motor offering a similar boost of 15kW/200Nm. Replacing the V8-powered model, the new G 500’s inline six-cylinder engine produces eight percent more power but six percent less torque than its predecessor.
Recent test drives in France revealed that the G 450d presents itself as the superior G-Class model. Despite having less power than the G 500, it is only four-tenths of a second slower than 100km/h, sharing the same top speed of 210km/h. Additionally, it boasts 18 to 20 percent higher fuel efficiency, as per WLTP test results.
On-road performance showcases the diesel variant’s 34 percent higher torque, making it more responsive at low speeds and more composed during cruising compared to the G 500. Off-road capabilities are also enhanced, with ample torque facilitating effortless navigation over rough terrain. Furthermore, the G 450d is noted for its smoother and quieter ride, exuding a refined demeanor compared to the G 500, which exhibits a slight exhaust drone under light throttle.
Importantly, the G 450d is positioned as the most cost-effective option within the new G-Class range, costing seven percent less than the G 500 and 35 percent less than the refreshed G 63 in Germany. This suggests a potential Australian market price of approximately $250,000. A final decision regarding the inclusion of the G 450d in Mercedes-Benz Australia’s lineup is expected to materialize within the coming weeks.
