Mercedes-Benz has decided to stop working on a new platform for electric cars. This platform was supposed to be used for the next models of EQE and EQS. A German publication called Handelsblatt talked to some people who work at Mercedes, and they said that this new platform, called MB.EA Large, won’t happen. This is because the EQE and EQS cars that are already out aren’t selling well. Not many people want to buy them, and the cars sit in showrooms for a long time.
Now, what will Mercedes do? They’ll update the existing platform called EVA2. This platform is already used for EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, and EQS SUV. They’ll make it better by changing the setup from 400 volts to 800 volts. Also, they’ll use new battery technology and electric motors to make the cars go farther on one charge.
Stopping the MB.EA Large platform has saved Mercedes a lot of money, between €4 billion and €6 billion. This means they won’t spend that much money on making new factories or developing the new platform. This isn’t the first time Mercedes has canceled a project related to EQS cars.
Earlier this year, some people said Mercedes was making a small gas engine to make the cars go farther. But Mercedes decided not to do this and focus on making electric cars instead. This is just one of the changes Mercedes is making to their electric car plans.
Mercedes, like other car companies, has changed its plans for electric cars. They used to want to only sell electric cars by 2030, but now they want half of their cars to be electric or hybrid by 2030. They’ll keep working on the MB.EA Medium platform, which will be used for electric C-Class and GLC models.
Mercedes is also working on other platforms for electric cars. One will be for small cars like the next CLA, GLB, and GLA-Class. They’ll also have a platform for electric vans and one for high-performance electric cars like the Vision AMG concept.
For cars with gas engines, Mercedes will probably make hybrid versions of the S-Class, GLE-Class, and GLS-Class. These cars will use an updated version of the MRA2 platform. They’ll sell these cars alongside their electric versions, which will use the improved EVA2 platform.
The current S-Class will still be made until 2033, with some changes planned for 2026 and 2029. Mercedes wants to keep using the same platforms and models for as long as they can, until they can make a new platform for one electric car that can replace all their current models.
