Finally, we’re getting a sneak peek at what Mercedes’ special cars, called Mythos, will be like. They revealed the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed concept in Monaco before this weekend’s Formula 1 Grand Prix. It’s based on the latest Mercedes-AMG SL, but they didn’t just lower the roof; they took it all off, making it like the classic roadsters such as the Ferrari Monza SP1 and Aston Martin V12 Speedster. One cool detail is the #10 on the front fenders, a tribute to a Merc race car that won in 1924.
The PureSpeed has modern touches too. It has a “halo,” like the ones on Formula 1 cars, made of carbon fiber to protect the driver. Unlike F1, though, it’s one long piece from the front to the back. The car comes with two special helmets, but they give a limited view, not suitable for regular roads.
The car’s red color at the top blends into gray and exposed carbon fiber at the back, similar to the Mercedes-AMG One. The front looks like the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 car, and the wheels have carbon fiber covers. Even the clock inside is custom-made by IWC Schaffhausen.
We don’t know about the engine yet, but we can guess it’s going to be powerful, maybe even the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 hybrid from the AMG SL 63 S E Performance, making 805 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque.
They’re planning to start making it next year, but it’s going to be super rare, only for the biggest Mercedes-Benz fans and collectors. They’re only making 250 of them, which is 25 fewer than the AMG One.
