Initially, it was said that almost 300,000 people came to the Jerez circuit for the fourth round of the 2024 season. They came to watch their local heroes like Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin, and Pedro Acosta compete.
This made the Spanish GP the most-watched MotoGP event ever, beating last year’s French Grand Prix record.
But later on Monday night, MotoGP said there was a mistake. They said only 181,289 fans were actually there over the race weekend from April 26 to 28.
Even though this is still a lot of people, it’s not as many as they first thought. But it’s still the most people at Jerez for almost 10 years.
The French GP in 2023 had more fans, with 278,805 people. And it looks like Le Mans will have big crowds again for the fifth round of the season on May 12.
MotoGP said sorry for the mistake in a statement. They explained what happened.
“At the 2024 Spanish GP, MotoGP said it was the best-attended Grand Prix ever. But we got the numbers wrong. We’re sorry. The real number of people there was 181,289. It’s not a new record, but it’s still the best attendance at Jerez for almost 10 years. The race was amazing, and it’ll be remembered for a long time. Next, MotoGP is going to Le Mans, which still holds the record for the best-attended MotoGP event ever.”
Dorna’s chief commercial officer Dan Rossomondo also said sorry on Twitter. He said, “I am sorry we made a hash of this. Especially sorry because it was a special few days.”
