Last weekend, Bagnaia won one of his best MotoGP races by holding off Marquez in a thrilling battle to claim victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Bagnaia has won back-to-back MotoGP world titles in 2022 and 2023 after joining the factory Ducati team in 2021. Meanwhile, Marquez has faced career-threatening injuries and Honda’s declining competitiveness, leading him to switch to the satellite squad Gresini Ducati in 2024.
Despite this, Marquez has shown strong performances, being in podium contention in the first three races and fighting for victory in the fourth event at Jerez. He now believes he has adapted well to Ducati and is eyeing a promotion to the factory team for 2025.
Talking about the possibility of Marquez joining him as a teammate in the future, Bagnaia said, “I don’t know. Marc comes from 12 years in the Honda team, and I’m sure he can contribute something to an official team like Ducati, but at the moment we are extremely competitive. We are attentive to every detail, we are at a very high level, so Marquez would adapt well to the situation.”
Marquez himself stated that a factory Ducati ride is not his only option for 2025, as other manufacturers have already initiated talks with him. He mentioned, “The important thing is that I have it clear and I don’t just have one option.”
Bagnaia recently signed a new two-year contract with Ducati, extending his stay until at least the end of the 2026 season. However, his teammate Enea Bastianini’s contract expires at the end of this season.
Jorge Martin, the current MotoGP world championship leader, who rides for Pramac on a factory-spec Ducati GP24, is also in contention for the factory Ducati slot alongside Marquez and Bastianini. All three riders are out of contract with their current teams at the end of this season.
