Ducati has admitted that its decision to sign Marc Marquez for its MotoGP team in 2025 has caused disagreement in Italy. The company acknowledges receiving criticism for choosing Marquez, a six-time champion, over Jorge Martin to partner with Francesco Bagnaia next season.

Initially, Ducati planned for Martin to replace Enea Bastianini and also intended for Marquez to join Pramac on a factory-spec bike. However, Marquez declined the offer to join Pramac, leading Ducati to change its decision and promote Marquez from Gresini instead.

While Marquez’s addition brings significant marketing and competitive benefits to Ducati, it has strained relationships with Martin and Pramac. Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali understands that not everyone supports their decision, especially in Italy, where opinions about Marquez’s past create a divisive atmosphere.

Domenicali explained, “It was a tough decision because we have a lot of respect for Jorge. Choosing between Jorge and Marc was difficult. Jorge has shown his strength over the years with us. Only time will tell if we made the right choice.”

He acknowledged the controversy surrounding Marquez’s selection, particularly in Italy, despite recognizing Marquez’s undeniable talent.

While Ducati’s signing of Marquez is a significant move, it may face challenges next year. Pramac, Ducati’s long-term partner, will no longer be associated with them after 20 years, switching to Yamaha. Marco Bezzecchi will join Martin at Aprilia, and Bastianini will leave Ducati altogether for Tech3 KTM.

Domenicali expressed hope that Ducati’s moves haven’t strengthened their competitors too much. He emphasized the importance of managing resources wisely amidst competitive pressures and rising costs in MotoGP.

He also highlighted Ducati’s commitment to sustainability, balancing investments in bike development with expenditure on riders and ensuring the well-being of the Ducati community in Borgo Panigale. While Ducati’s decision to sign Marquez aims to enhance its MotoGP team’s competitiveness, it has sparked debate and impacted relationships within the racing community and among fans in Italy.
