If you’re experiencing déjà vu, it’s because this unique 1978 Ford Mustang II coupe might have graced the pages of HOT ROD magazine in the past. Now, after years of evolution, the car has emerged with a fresh coat of paint and is up for grabs as Lot #W124 at Mecum Auctions’ “Dana Mecums’ 37th Original Spring Classic,” scheduled from May 10 to May 18, 2024, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

At its core, this Mustang II retains its 1978 heritage, a period often dismissed by die-hard enthusiasts as the nadir of Mustang history. However, this custom build challenges that notion with its bold modifications, earning praise even from staunch Mustang II critics.

Dubbed “Phoenix,” the Mustang boasts striking Grabber Blue paint and a lengthened frame, extended by 12 inches using 1 5/8-inch DOM steel. Riding on an independent suspension, it features 19-inch rear wheels wrapped in 325/30ZR19 Toyo Proxes T1 tires, while 18-inch fronts wear 275/35R18 rubber.

Custom bulged fenders, a distinctive fascia blending Mustang II and S197 styling cues, and Ford Torino taillights complete the exterior transformation. Inside, black leather upholstery, reminiscent of a 1969 Mustang, graces the cabin, complemented by a custom dash and tilt steering column.

An electronic instrument cluster and a center console housing the ignition key, start button, and Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual shifter enhance the cockpit. Safety and chassis rigidity are ensured by a multipoint body-colored roll cage. Under the hood lies the true gem: a second-generation 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V-8 engine featuring Borla’s Eight Stack electronic fuel injection system with individual 55mm throttle bodies.

Engine tuning is managed by a Holley EFI Terminator X ECU, while Borla’s three-inch stainless exhaust with Atak mufflers provides an exhilarating soundtrack. Truly a one-of-a-kind creation, Phoenix defies convention and demands attention, even from the most ardent Mustang II detractors. The auction on Wednesday, May 15, at Mecum/Indy, will reveal how bidders respond to this exceptional 1978 Ford Mustang II, with live coverage available on MotorTrend, MAX, and Discovery.
