Speculation about a fourth manufacturer entering NASCAR is nothing new, with Dodge often being the frontrunner in discussions. However, recent reports indicate that Honda might be seriously considering joining Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota in NASCAR’s top-flight Cup Series.
Veteran motorsport journalist Marshall Pruett added fuel to the fire when he mentioned Honda and NASCAR on his podcast. Despite Pruett’s main focus on IMSA and IndyCar, his close ties with Honda and Acura, prominent in both series, lend weight to his comments.
“I have a list—I wish I could tell you what’s on it—of things that I know are in the works, could happen, are being discussed,” Pruett stated. “If you’re a Honda fan and you like NASCAR, you’re probably going to be happy in the future.”
Following Pruett’s remarks, NASCAR writer Adam Stern reported that discussions between NASCAR and Honda are intensifying. NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell indicated talks are progressing with a potential fourth manufacturer.
Stern contacted Honda and Acura Motorsports Manager Chuck Schifsky, who stated, “We have nothing new to report in terms of our future motorsport direction.”
While Schifsky’s response doesn’t confirm Honda’s entry into NASCAR, it’s worth noting that in 2020, former Honda Performance Development boss Ted Klaus cited Honda’s focus on IndyCar and IMSA.
However, with HPD now under the Honda Racing Corporation, which oversees various racing endeavors, including Formula 1 and potential Le Mans entries, the possibility of Honda exploring NASCAR seems more plausible.
