Larson had a busy day, first qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. Then, just 30 minutes before the race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, he arrived.
Because he didn’t practice or qualify his car this weekend, Kevin Harvick did it instead. So, Larson had to start from the back of the field.
At first, he struggled to move up in the race. But later, a decision to get new tires gave him a boost. With 42 laps left, he restarted in 10th place, the first car with new tires. In just five laps, he moved up to third. But his advantage didn’t last long, and he fell behind.
Larson said, “I thought we were in a great position to win. I thought for sure we would win, but just didn’t work out. We’ll do our homework and try to get our car better for next year.”
Despite not being there all weekend, Larson praised his NASCAR team for preparing a competitive car. He appreciated their hard work and was glad to have a chance to win.
Larson got a warm welcome from the crowd when he arrived at the track. He also received cheers during driver introductions.
He said that the strong performance on Sunday night meant “something more” after his good showing in Indy 500 qualifying.
“To be lined up on the second row of the Indianapolis 500 is pretty crazy. Yeah, I just can’t believe it, really,” he said. “I thought if we could make the Fast 12, that would be exceeding expectations.
“To qualify as well as we did (Saturday) and then get into the Fast Six today was unbelievable. Happy with how it’s gone so far there, and now I look forward to hopefully get better in race trim.”
