It’s not clear yet what role Allgaier will play because it depends on the weather in Indianapolis on Sunday.
Larson will be at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday for NASCAR Cup practice and qualifying.
Allgaier will step in for Larson only if Larson can’t make it to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600 race on Sunday evening.
Allgaier said, “Obviously, their goal is that they won’t need me. It’s been really, really cool to see the kind of preparation that they have and where they’re at with everything.”
As of Friday afternoon, the weather forecast for Sunday in Indianapolis doesn’t look good. There’s an 80 percent chance of rain, and the track doesn’t have lights. The forecast for the Coke 600 at Charlotte is better.
Allgaier might still have a role to play. If Larson’s Indy 500 race goes long because of a delayed start, Allgaier would start the Coke 600 in Larson’s car.
Allgaier has a lot of experience in Cup races and knows Hendrick Motorsports well. He’s made 81 Cup starts in his career and has driven on the Charlotte oval track four times.
Because Larson can practice on Saturday, Allgaier won’t have any practice time in Larson’s car if he needs to drive.
Allgaier said, “Everything that I would sit in or that I would drive would be very, very relevant to what I would have to get in if I was to get into Kyle’s car.”
Whether or not Allgaier gets to drive Larson’s car, he feels lucky to be part of what could be a historic moment in motorsports.
Allgaier said, “The weather is not playing as nice as we’d like for it to in the forecast for the double right now but they’ve got all the plans in place for both sides of it. You know, I just get to be the lucky one that gets to be a part of what could potentially go down as kind of a cool spot in history.”
