Castroneves, who’s a part-owner of MSR, will replace Blomqvist for two upcoming races, including this weekend’s Detroit Grand Prix.
Blomqvist had a tough time, crashing at the start of the Indianapolis 500 and hasn’t had good finishes this season. MSR’s entry needs to earn points to qualify for a cash prize, but it’s currently tied for 22nd place.
Castroneves, who’s won the Indy 500 four times, explained, “We need to start earning points quickly, especially after last year’s situation. Since Blomqvist hasn’t raced at this track before, we decided more experienced hands might help us get points.”
Why make this change now and not earlier in the season? Castroneves said, “We need to stop losing points now and then think about the future. Right now, our focus is getting into the top 22.”
Considering that the next race is on a new track for Blomqvist, there’s concern. Castroneves said, “It won’t be easy for him to race on a new track. He understands that.”
Castroneves hinted that upcoming oval races might also be challenging for Blomqvist. He said, “We’re taking it one step at a time, but we’re focusing on the present.”
Blomqvist isn’t at the Detroit race this weekend; he’s back in Florida. Despite the change, Castroneves praised Blomqvist, calling him “a superstar” and saying he’s part of the team as long as he wants.
However, when asked about Blomqvist’s return, Castroneves didn’t give a clear answer. He said, “Right now, we’re taking it one race at a time.”
