Cam Waters got to race in the Cup series on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway in California. He drove for RFK Racing, and it was his third race in the series this year after two starts in the Truck Series.
In qualifying on Saturday, he didn’t do so well and started in the 31st position. But during Sunday’s race, he worked his way up into the top 20 by the second stage.
However, on lap 35 out of 110, there was a big crash. Josh Berry cut across Erik Jones, causing a pile-up involving several cars, including Martin Truex Jr. and Waters. Waters’ car suffered major suspension damage, and he had to retire after 66 laps, finishing in 35th place.
Despite the disappointing end to his race, Waters remained positive. He said, “I had so much fun. This weekend and the whole experience coming to a road course in a Cup car was sensational.”
He thanked everyone who made it possible for him to race. He explained that at the start of the race, he took it easy for a couple of laps and then started passing other cars. He found the car to be very fast and was making good progress.
However, everything changed when he got caught in the crash on lap 35. He described the situation, saying, “I think there were three or four cars going into one corner – it just was never going to work, unfortunately.”
Despite the setback, Waters remained optimistic. He said, “We were looking really good, and it’s a shame what happened, but I’m not going to let that put a damper on my weekend.”
Waters’ fellow Supercars driver, Will Brown, also made his Cup debut in the same race. Brown had his own issues but finished 31st.
When asked if he would like to race in the Cup series again, Waters said he definitely would. He hopes to get another opportunity and have another chance to compete in the series.
