In an unexpected development, Stellantis, the automotive conglomerate responsible for iconic brands such as Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat in the U.S., has announced a significant leadership change for its North American operations. Effective February 1, Carlos Zarlenga will assume the role of North America Chief Operating Officer, succeeding Mark Stewart.
The timing of the announcement is notable, as it precedes Stewart’s scheduled appearance at an automotive symposium organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Known for his distinctive fashion sense and approachable demeanor, Stewart has held the position of Chief Operating Officer of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles North America since 2018, continuing in the same role following the formation of Stellantis.
Carlos Zarlenga, currently serving as the President of Stellantis Mexico, is set to take the reins in North America. Zarlenga’s tenure in Mexico proved highly successful, marked by significant achievements such as increased sales, expanded market share, and enhanced return on investment throughout 2023. The Mexican market under his leadership concluded the year with its highest-ever recorded profit level. Zarlenga joined Stellantis in 2022, transitioning from General Motors, where he held the position of President of GM South America.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares expressed confidence in Zarlenga’s ability to navigate the demanding North American market and drive transformative change in the company’s business model toward electrification in the region. Tavares emphasized Zarlenga’s track record of uniting diverse teams and delivering anticipated results. The CEO thanked Mark Stewart for his contributions to the company during his tenure and extended best wishes for his future endeavors.
Stewart’s departure from Stellantis raises questions about his next professional steps, as details about his new position or plans remain undisclosed at this time.
