The electric two-wheeler market is witnessing a surge in innovation, with a variety of unconventional and fascinating machines entering the scene. From an urban perspective, electric vehicles (EVs) are a logical choice. T

hey offer quiet operation, easy maneuverability, and ample torque to navigate through busy city streets. With practical additions, they have the potential to replace cars for daily city commutes.

This was the vision of French brothers Henri and Olivier Rabatel when they established Motowatt, an electric motorcycle startup, in 2020. Now, four years later, Motowatt is unveiling the W1X, a distinctive electric motorcycle designed for safe and efficient urban mobility.

The Rabatel brothers took an unconventional approach with the W1X, incorporating components not commonly seen on electric two-wheelers.

It boasts a rugged steel frame and an intriguing cantilever-type front suspension system. Additionally, it features not one but two electric motors, offering an all-wheel-drive e-moto experience.

The development of the Motowatt W1X took four years of intensive research and development, with a strong emphasis on creating a carbon-neutral machine. Motowatt emphasizes efficient manufacturing practices, utilizing common components and processes to streamline production.

The company’s design office is located near Lyon, France, while its production facility is situated near Figeac in southwestern France. Currently, Motowatt is a participant in the France System 2030 initiative, a significant government investment program supporting innovative companies with a forward-thinking approach.

In terms of technology, the W1X is designed to be a practical and user-friendly city commuter, suitable for A1 and B license holders. It offers a generous range of 130 kilometers (approximately 81 miles) on a single charge, thanks to its dual motors providing optimal traction and stability in various road conditions.

To cater to individual preferences and needs, Motowatt ensures that customers can customize the W1X with practical accessories such as a tank box, rear luggage case, and EMC adjustable shock absorbers to accommodate additional cargo weight.

The braking system can also be upgraded with high-quality components from Beringer, and there’s the option to install larger wheels and tires.

In terms of pricing and availability, the Motowatt W1X starts at 15,000 euros, or approximately USD 16,152 – a considerable investment, but one that reflects the pioneering nature of this new technology. Motowatt has announced that deliveries of the W1X will commence in January 2025.
