Nearly four years have passed since Audi unveiled the current-generation S3, prompting the need for a facelift. The compact performance model, adorned in a typical Audi Sport livery, is being teased in both hatchback and sedan variants.

Surprisingly, despite being a mid-cycle update, there are numerous mechanical enhancements. At the core of the new S3 lies an upgraded version of the familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

This four-cylinder TFSI unit now churns out 329 horsepower and 420 Newton-meters (310 pound-feet) of torque, marking a significant increase of 23 hp and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) over its predecessor, aligning perfectly with the mechanically related Volkswagen Golf R 333 special edition.

Paired with the upgraded engine is a revised seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission boasting halved gear shift times during full acceleration.

Notably, the S3 now benefits from a rear torque splitter inherited from the RS3, enhancing cornering dynamics and driver confidence by optimizing torque distribution between the rear wheels.

To cope with the increased power, Audi has equipped the facelifted S3 with larger front brakes. The 18-inch steel brakes now feature a 357-mm diameter, with a 4 mm increase in thickness to 34 mm.

Enhanced braking performance is further aided by new twin-piston calipers and enlarged pads, complemented by stickier 235/35 tires developed in collaboration with Falken for the 19-inch wheels.

In addition to the beefier brakes, the front axle receives a new pivot bearing on the MacPherson strut and stiffer wishbones. Combined with advancements in the progressive steering system and retuned dampers, Audi promises that the S3 is now sharper and more agile than ever before.

The full unveiling is slated for later this year, coinciding with the introduction of the updated A3 family. It’s expected that the engine lineup will mirror that of the recently revealed VW Golf facelift.

Furthermore, the RS3 is set to receive tweaks, potentially resulting in more power from its five-cylinder engine without resorting to electrification. Audi has hinted at the possibility of massaging the 2.5 TFSI to produce an output beyond the current 401 hp (394 hp in Europe).

Efforts are underway to determine whether the American version will adopt the revisions seen in the European model, although prospects for the S3 Sportback’s availability in the US remain uncertain.
