If we were to select a quintessential example of basic European motoring, it would undoubtedly be the Citroën 2CV. However, we’re not talking about the typical “deux chevaux” (French for “two horses”) here. Instead, we’re delving into the obscure 4×4 Sahara model, of which only 693 units were ever manufactured.

Describing it as merely an all-wheel-drive version of the 2CV would be an understatement, as this car boasted two engines operating independently. This unique setup allowed owners to switch between front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive as needed. The Late Brake Show’s Jonny Smith recently had the chance to explore a fully restored example of this rare breed, and it’s quite the spectacle.

The budget-friendly off-roader came equipped from the factory with two engines and two gearboxes, featuring a reinforced chassis and sturdier suspension arms to handle rough terrain.

Engineers from France outfitted it with robust tubular bumpers and dual fuel tanks to supply the front and rear engines. Even with both gas tanks full, this 2CV 4×4 weighs in at a mere 735 kilograms (1,620 pounds).

Starting the vehicle is a straightforward process, facilitated by two ignition keys – one for each engine. The inner key ignites the front engine, while the outer key fires up the rear-mounted engine.

Each engine is identical, boasting a 425-cc, flat-twin configuration, and producing 13.5 horsepower and 19.53 pound-feet (26.48 Newton-meters) of torque. With both engines engaged, the car reaches a top speed of approximately 60 mph (nearly 100 km/h).

Due to the placement of the two fuel tanks beneath the seats, there are openings in the doors to accommodate the gas pump. The driver utilizes a separate lever to synchronize the two gearboxes.

Citroën made several adjustments to the bodywork to accommodate the new components, further enhancing the quirky appearance of the 2CV.

Distinguishing features include differently cut wheel arches, slats in the rear fenders for engine cooling, and bespoke taillights flanking the additional engine’s cooling fan. At the front, the 4×4 Sahara sports a redesigned hood with a recess for the spare wheel.

With minimal soundproofing and the symphony of two engines accompanying your journey, it’s no surprise that this car is notably loud. Furthermore, its price tag was a deterrent, costing twice as much as a standard 2CV. Consequently, it wasn’t a commercial triumph but rather an experimental venture.

For those curious about the value of these cars, Bonhams auctioned one off for €86,250 in late 2019. That same year, another fetched $106,400 at a Pebble Beach auction hosted by Gooding & Company. Additionally, in 2019, RM Sotheby’s sold the ultimate 2CV for €74,750 at an auction held at Villa Erba.
