Toyota is displaying unusual confidence in its enthusiasts by allowing a select few to experience driving its AE86 BEV Concept, a privilege rarely granted to the general public with concept cars.
As part of a lottery in Japan, lucky fans can apply for the chance to drive the AE86 BEV around Toyota City for three hours, with applications open from February 13 to February 26.
Although Toyota hasn’t disclosed the exact number of winners, there are 13 three-hour slots available, indicating the approximate number of fortunate individuals who will have the opportunity to drive the AE86 BEV.
Powered by a motor sourced from the Tundra i-Force Max hybrid pickup, delivering 94 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels, the AE86 BEV offers a unique driving experience.
Despite its weight of 2,359 pounds, courtesy of the Lexus NX 450h+ PHEV battery, it remains impressively light for an electric vehicle.
Inside, the AE86 BEV features Bride bucket seats and diamond-pattern steel panels on the floor, with the Lexus-sourced battery occupying the space originally designated for rear seats and cargo.
However, winners are not permitted to replicate scenes from Initial D, as the lottery rules explicitly prohibit drifting and driving through mountain passes, among other forms of spirited driving.
Winners are liable for any damage or accidents that occur during their time with the AE86 BEV. Nonetheless, for true Toyota enthusiasts, the opportunity is undoubtedly worthwhile.
