Volkswagen has initiated pre-sales for the facelifted Golf in Europe, unveiling the special “Edition 50” model to commemorate 50 years since the debut of the original version of the hatchback. This release coincides with the introduction of higher pricing for the updated range, now starting at €27,180 (approximately $29,300).

The Golf Edition 50, based on the top-tier Style trim, boasts several distinctive features celebrating the milestone.

Notable additions include “50” badges on the B-pillars, discreet “Edition 50” emblems on the side sills and steering wheel, along with exterior enhancements like 18-inch Leeds alloy wheels, an LED strip on the grille, and tinted rear glass. Inside, the car features brushed stainless steel pedals and a black headliner.

Standard equipment comprises the flagship 12.9-inch Discover infotainment system with navigation, keyless access, the IDA voice assistant integrated with ChatGPT, an anti-theft alarm, and driving profile selection.

Optional Plus package offers a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, head-up display, and the more advanced IQ Light matrix LED headlights.

Alongside the special edition, VW has announced the full lineup, including the entry-level Golf, mid-spec Life, and flagship Style models. The base model features 15-inch steel wheels but still includes LED headlights and wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto.

The launch powertrain lineup consists of non-electrified 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI paired with a six-speed manual and mild-hybrid 1.0 eTSI and 1.5 eTSI paired with a seven-speed DSG.

The automatic mild hybrid versions benefit from improved efficiency and performance thanks to the 48 Volt system, VTG turbocharger, and Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus) technologies.

VW has confirmed plans for “further derivatives and drive systems,” likely including improved plug-in hybrids and turbodiesel variants. This will also include the launch of the performance-focused Golf GTI and the upcoming Golf R.

The facelifted VW Golf is available for pre-order in European markets, with prices starting at €27,180 ($29,258) for the entry-level Golf Hatchback and €28,280 ($30,442) for the Golf Variant. The high-spec VW Golf Edition 50, available only with the more powerful 1.5-liter engines, starts from €36,820 ($39,617).

With over 37 million units sold since its 1974 debut, the Golf remains one of the most successful nameplates designed by Giugiaro. While once a best seller in Europe, it’s now globally outsold by the Tiguan SUV.
