Farewell to Alfa Romeo's V6: Embracing Electric Future

Alfa Romeo, led by Larry Dominique, head of its North American division, is bidding farewell to the Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter V6 engine currently powering the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio, delivering up to 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

According to a LinkedIn post by Dominique, 2024 marks the final year for the pure internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models, as the company transitions towards electrification.

Specifically, orders for the US and Canada will cease at the end of April 2024, with production concluding in June 2024 at the Cassino plant.

In 2024, Alfa Romeo is offering limited editions of the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio known as the Carbon Editions, restricted to 130 units and available exclusively in North America.

“This represents the last opportunity to own a Quadrifoglio powered solely by combustion engine technology as we embark on our journey towards an electrified future. However, this is not the end of the story,” Dominique stated on the platform. “I eagerly anticipate unveiling the next phase in the four-leaf clover’s evolution.”

The forthcoming phase includes the introduction of an electric replacement for the Giulia boasting 1,000 horsepower. Yet, for those enamored with the Giulia’s adept handling and spirited engine, astronomical figures might not suffice.

A similar sentiment applies to the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, renowned for its dynamic driving prowess. While Stellantis is expected to uphold the legacy of the Italian automaker and its iconic four-leaf clover, the transition to electric replacements for traditionally powered icons remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, despite the discontent from fans and customers alike, Alfa Romeo remains committed to fully embracing electric power by 2027, with all new launches being electric-only from 2025 onwards. This marks a poignant shift for enthusiasts, although there remains a glimmer of hope, albeit at a premium.

Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato confirmed last October the brand’s intention to preserve the V6 engine for some time. While this appears contradictory to established company policies, it’s speculated that he may be alluding to limited-volume special editions akin to the 33 Stradale.

The unfolding future will ultimately reveal the course of action Alfa Romeo will take, but for now, it appears the brand is steadfast in its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs).
