Gold-plated trim might seem like something straight out of a rapper’s car, but automakers were incorporating it into their designs long before hip-hop took off in the 1970s. This trend dates back even further than the luxurious cars commissioned for kings in the 1920s. Chevrolet made waves with a gold-plated Bel Air as early as 1954.

However, this wasn’t your typical production model or a custom order. It was the 50 millionth vehicle manufactured by General Motors. Unveiled on November 23, 1954, in Flint, Michigan, it was showcased on a platform, marking a significant moment in automotive history with the largest corporate celebration of its time.

While Chevrolet later released a Commemorative Edition of the 1955 Bel Air with a limited run of 5,000 units featuring a new gold paint, these were essentially regular production models with a different color scheme.

On the other hand, the 50 millionth vehicle was truly unique. This Bel Air hardtop not only boasted a gold exterior but also featured a matching engine bay and chassis. Its two-tone interior was exclusive to this car, and all of its bright trim, from badges to window frames and even stainless steel elements inside the cabin, was plated in 24-carat gold.

What became of this exceptional Bel Air once its parade days were over? Rumor has it that the Sport Coupe eventually entered private ownership and was lost for years. Its one-of-a-kind status was only rediscovered when it resurfaced in a restorer’s garage.

Although General Motors reportedly offered to restore the car, the owner declined, fearing potential loss of ownership. Sadly, the owner has since passed away, and the car’s whereabouts are once again unknown.

However, while the original may be lost, an incredibly accurate replica has been crafted by Snodgrass Chevy Restoration in Melbourne, Florida.

Recently showcased by “eClassic Autos” on YouTube, this replica is a sight to behold. True to the original, it features gold-plated chromework and a paint job that closely resembles the 50 millionth Bel Air. Furthermore, its interior replicates the gold and rose detailing found on the seats and door panels.

No expense was spared in recreating this two-door hardtop, with meticulous attention to detail extending under the hood. Nearly every component is finished in gold paint, staying faithful to the early 1955-model-year Bel Air.

It’s a breathtaking homage to a legendary vehicle. For those eager to see this remarkable Chevy in person, its public debut is scheduled for the 2024 Detroit AutoRama from March 1-3.
